Interview with 3 times Tiree Champion John Skye
John Skye on Tiree getting back on the PWA Tour CalendarRRD Pro Rider John Skye’s revealed how he’d love to see the Scottish Island of Tiree as a destination on the PWA Tour Calendar again in the future. The 34-year-old pro’s preparing for this year’s Tiree Wave Classic, which is to be held from October 8th, and is celebrating its 25th anniversary.“I would love Tiree to be a World Cup event,” John says. “It would be as good as any of the other spots on the tour, if not better. When the weather comes together on Tiree it’s one of the best spots in the world for wave sailing.” Not only that, but the community atmosphere on the island is fantastic,” John continues. “There are only a few hundred people there normally so when the Tiree Wave Classic’s on, it feels like the population doubles! But everyone on the island is so friendly and welcoming, it really is special.”Skyeboy has a terrific record in Tiree and admits it would be a boost for him if it became a PWA Tour event in the future. “For me, personally, it’d be great,” he says. “I tend to do better when it’s colder, for all the British guys it would be fantastic to have it on the tour.”Tiree’s location in Scotand’s Inner Hebrides doesn’t make it an easy place to get to, but John says it’s all worth it once you’re there. “The beaches are fantastic,” he says, “And you can have quality wave sailing with pretty much any wind direction. Of course it’s difficult to get to, and it would obviously be colder than most other spots on the Tour, but everyone loves it – like I say - it’s special. But John admits it won’t be easy to get Tiree on the PWA map going forward.“It all comes down to money. In the UK there are so many different sports for sponsors to spend their cash on, so it’s not easy to find the levels of funding that would be needed. But it would be brilliant if it could be on the calendar again.”The Tiree Wave Classic, the third leg of the BWA Wave Tour, runs from October 8th-14th 2011 and is funded by EventScotland and Argyll & Bute Council. The 25th Anniversary event is hosted by Pura Vida Boardriders with support from Clamac, Tiree Lodge Hotel, Wild Diamond, Oxbow, Firefly Tonics, Beachbum Beanbags, K38 Safety, Springbank Whisky, Tiree Music Festival, Chocolate Brownie Company. For riders accommodation at the Hynish Centre including breakfast and dinner at only £32 per night email jim@puravidaboardriders.co.ukRegistration is now open at www.tireewaveclassic.co.uk to take advantage of our online discount!
