RECORD NUMBERS FOR 2013 TIREE WAVE CLASSIC

A record field of 53 windsurfers has registered for the 2013 Tiree Wave Classic.It is the most prestigious and longest standing competition of its type and takes place on the Inner Hebridean isle of Tiree.The impressive tally beats the previous record of 52, which occurred in the special 25th anniversary year of 2011.The fleet has been boosted by a terrific turn-out among the Youth category, with 14 youngsters taking part.Elsewhere, 13 professionals are taking each other one, while there are 12 amateurs, eight in the masters competition, and six ladies.The record line-up of youths has been helped thanks in part to a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Scotland initiative, encouraging youngsters to taste the action on Tiree.Up and coming windsurfers have been brought over by RYA Scotland regional development officer Robin Nicol, who is the founder of Scottish Windfest, an annual event in Ayrshire.After a busy day registering, the competitors are now enjoying the sunshine, waiting for the forecast strong winds to hit.“We are going to enjoy a nice few days relaxing into island life on the sundrenched and beautiful Tiree,” said Head Judge Ian Ross.“A few of the professional sailors will be offering some Pro coaching clinics for the other competitors throughout Sunday and Monday,” he said.“Everyone is excited about the stormy conditions predicted for the middle of the week, with strong Easterly winds and a big South westerly swell,” said Ian.Ben Proffitt from Shropshire is the defending men’s champion.
