Day 7 2014 - The Quickening!
What is The Quickening? - This was the first time for a new knockout format that spearheaded the Pro Comp at this Tiree Wave Classic 2014.The first round started with all the pro riders remaining on the island of Tiree and two wildcard spots that went to Amateur 1st and 2nd Place Mike Archer (Simmer) and local ripper Scotty McDowell.Sam Neal (Simmer/Simmer/Puravida) injured his knee in the warmup on a big back loop so was an early exit, next followed by Mike Archer and Alfie Hart (Gaastra/Tabou).The conditions were great with solid cross-shore wind at Balephuil and head to logo high sets firing in.Although he was charging, the points were very close between all the riders, and Dave Horrocks (Gaastra/Tabou) was next to exit the comp.Scotty McDowell (simmer/simmer) is one of the top amateurs and a local Scottish charger, and certainly kept the pros in check to finish the comp in 4th place! There was only half a point in it to leave the final 3 to battle for the broadsword and win this years Tiree Wave Classic.Bubble (JP/Pryde) Lecky (RRD) and Phil (Gaastra/Tabou) were all going hard with some huge back loops scoring highest so far. Phil seemed to be the favourite from an explosive start, but Lecky was on fire and took the highest point score going balls to the wall in the last but one round! With Bubble in 3rd that left Leckie and Phil to battle for the top spot! Phil saw Leckie go for a double early on and stepped up his game to match the challenge! Both went for doubles, but Phil put in some polished and radical one handed and one footed Backloops to win the judges over and secure the title!1st - Phil Horrocks (Gaastra/Tabou)2nd - Aleksy ‘Leckie’ Gayda (RRD)3rd - Andy ‘Bubble’ Chambers (JP/Pryde)Head Judge Willie Angus from Wild Diamond - “The format was just great to watch and judge, the riders delivered outstanding action right at the top of their game and I am sure we will run this kind of competition again!”Jim Brooks, Event Organiser - "I will let the video set the scene for you - enjoy one of the best comps ever delivered on the stunning Island of Tiree”Tiree Wave Classic 2014 is funded by Argyll &Bute Council and supported by EventScotland the BWA, Puravida Boardriders, Wild Diamond, TireeLodge Hotel, Calmac Ferries and the community of Tiree View our Video Gallery for the highlights of the days action.
