RYA Youth Camp Tiree 2014

Tiree offers some of the best conditions to learn to windsurf in the UK, and Wild Diamond is one of the busiest RYA Recognised centres as a result!  Although the more exposed beaches are famous for the conditions that wave sailors from all over the UK will travel for, Wild Diamond run a fantastic fresh water Loch in the centre of the island giving perfect surroundings to learn and improve!

Tiree Wave Classic has been working with Robin Nicol from RYA Scotland for a number of years to grow this side of the event, and introduce more young starts of the future to the thrills of wavesailing!  Whilst on the island they get to hang out with the stars of our sport and coached by them on the Loch as well!

Robin Nicol, RYA Scotland - “The RYA programme delivers great training and racing for kids and teaches them all the core skills, but what we do on Tiree is show them the other side of our sport with action in the waves!  It’s an amazing place to go, and the bond of meeting their heroes during the classic week”

Ben Proffit, Pro Rider (Simmer/Simmer/Oshea/Funsport) - “I learned with the RYA back when I started out and followed the racing program right up to competing for my country at times, but I was always super passionate about wavesailing!  The core skills you get from coaching as a youth are what gives you a head start in the waves……it’s great to see so many kids getting into it her on Tiree”

For 2014 we have seen over 30 young windsurfers from the Scottish main land and local islands hit the water this week, along with their families that have come to support and see the Wave Classic itself!  In the next year or two we are certain to see more than just a few of these boys and girls make a name for themselves in the main competition itself…...
